Hi Friend,

I've been getting questions about the Robot Assistant Field Guide. Three come up more than any other. They're fair questions, so let me answer them directly.

"I don't like Obsidian. Can I still build my robot?"

Yes!

This is an easy point of confusion. The magic really happens here with Claude Cowork. In order for your robot to have memory, it needs to create a bunch of text files on your computer that it can read as it does its work. Obsidian gives you the ability to navigate through those text files easily and read and modify, but that's not the only game in town. Some people are using the Mac app NotePlan, which also gives you the ability to access, read, and modify text files. I just added a video to the course demonstrating the Robot with Noteplan and DEVONthink. Still others are just using a folder full of text files. I use Obsidian in the course because it's free and I didn't want you to have to buy another app, but there are several ways to pull this off.

"Do I need to be technical?"

No. You don't need to code. You don't need a computer science degree. If you can organize files into folders, you can build this system. The foundation videos start from absolute zero. I walk you through installing Obsidian, setting up Claude, and building your first workflow. The entire system runs on plain text files and natural language instructions.

"Is this just AI hype?"

I use this system every day. Not as a demo. Not as a proof of concept. Every day. It processes my email, runs my daily planning, manages my tasks, tracks my projects, helps with customer support, and handles my shutdown routine. I've been building and refining it for months. The Robot Assistant Field Guide teaches the same method I use. Claude Cowork connected to an Obsidian vault, with a skill system that teaches your assistant how you work.

The biggest difference isn't even the time. It's that I stay in the zone. I used to break focus a dozen times a day to handle admin. Now the assistant handles it and I keep working.

If it were hype, I wouldn't be betting a major product launch on it.

"What if AI changes significantly?"

It will. That's what the workshops are for. The foundation of the method, using structured text files to give an AI context about your work and workflows, is durable. The specific tools will evolve. When they do, the workshops address it. You're not buying a frozen snapshot. You're buying a method and a 10-week working relationship where we adapt together. Moreover, you're buyin the skills to evolve yourself over time.

Highly Recommended!

I've owned most of David's Field Guides, but this one clicked in a way that surprised me. I poured through all ten introductory videos in a weekend, while simultaneously building out my own Robot Assistant. Highly recommended!– Matt G.

Another Winner from David Sparks: A Step-by-Step Path to Automating Your Digital Life

I highly recommend the MacSparky Robot Assistant Field Guide, if you want to safely automate routine tasks on your home computer. I have purchased many of David's Field Guides and they all lead you from no knowledge to the state of being comfortable with experimenting and growing on your own. David explains the concepts and walks you through the steps to implement the concept. It is easy to follow along with the video using the referenced apps on your computer. The bite size videos allow you to learn and play at your own pace. I am up to video 6 and see exactly where this is headed. I look forward to completing the course and using my robot assistant to automate my life.

David Sparks (MacSparky)

In a world where technology is increasingly conspiring to steal our focus and attention, my goal is to teach you how to be more productive with Apple technology. I want to help you achieve what is most important to you and enjoy your life at the same time using technology instead of becoming another one of its victims. Pretty much everything I make points at that North Star. I believe in this message so much that I’ve staked my livelihood on it.

THE MACSPARKY DISPATCH Hi Friend, The first time I installed TextExpander, it changed how I used my Mac. Snippets I typed twenty times a day became three keystrokes. It wasn’t the most powerful text utility on the Mac. There were heavier options out there. But TextExpander hit the spot: the feature was powerful enough to be useful and simple enough to use every day. That’s a hard place to land. Wispr Flow has done the same thing for dictation. I’ve been dictating into Macs for years. I’ve...

THE MACSPARKY DISPATCH Hi Friend, I want to talk about stretch goals, because I think they're doing you more harm than good. The idea sounds reasonable. You pick your top three priorities for the week, then you add a few more items labeled "stretch goals." If you get to them, great. If not, no pressure. Except that's not how your brain works. (Or at least mine.) Your brain sees five things on the list. It doesn't care about the label. It sees five commitments. And by the time you finish your...

MPU 846: Apple Watch On this episode of Mac Power Users, David and Stephen go all-in on the Apple Watch. They cover the history of the device, share their current watch face setups (with image links in the show notes), dig into the bands they’re actually wearing, walk through the complications and apps they rely on from their wrist, and get into the health and safety features that have quietly become essential. They also cover buying advice and Family Setup. Before the main topic, they break...
