Hi Gang,
I often spend my free time in the wood shop. I’m what other woodworkers refer to as a Neanderthal because I work primarily with hand tools. I like the intentionality of it. I grew up with this hobby at my dad’s elbow but took a 20-year hiatus before recently coming back.
During my break from the shop, there was an explosion of new tool companies making the latest and greatest woodworking gizmos. Of course, I love that stuff. Just look at my new smoothing plane. It’s a work of art.
But then there is H Carpenter. He’s a guy living somewhere in Asia. His saw looks like a hacksaw from the hardware store dumpster. His chisels look ancient and certainly not made using the latest technological marvels of metallurgy. His mallet looks like a sawed-off tree limb. And yet he bangs out these intricate joints like nobody’s business. (If you watch one of his videos, his smile at the end is the payoff.)
H Carpenter doesn’t care about the tools. He cares about the work. It’s easy for us to forget that sometimes.
We’re Closing in on 17.2
The next big update is looming with some nice updates. The biggest of which will be the release of the Journal app.
Software Applications Incorporated
When the Workflow (later Shortcuts) app founders left Apple earlier this year, I could hardly wait to see what they’d make. Turns out it’s an AI product that simplifies automating your Mac. It’s early days, and there’s nothing to share, but I’m eager to see what they do.
Also, their website simulates classic Mac OS, and I love it.
Apple Card Questions
It looks like Apple and Goldman Sachs are parting ways over the Apple Card. I’ll be shocked if Apple doesn’t find a new bank to work with.
Your pal,
David
p.s. I've heard from a few readers who only want an email related to Field Guides. If that's you, click this link, and I'll stop sending you these Friday emails.
This Newsletter is sponsored by Making Light Candles, my favorite source for candles (both as gifts and for myself). There is something special about lighting a candle. It’s a ritual we humans have been doing for a long time, and I find it an excellent way to stay focused and in the moment.
Making Light Candles are great for this. It’s a small family business with over forty years of experimentation and a solid commitment to sustainability. They use all-natural soy waxes, cotton wicks, reusable and recyclable containers, and a carefully curated collection of beautiful fragrances.
With a Making Light subscription, you (or your loved one) will get a monthly delivery of several Making Light candles, matches, and a nice note.
And when you gift a Making Light subscription, you’re helping spread the idea of focus. The subscription is based on using the candle as a ritual to do something you love. I treat these candles as special and burn them only when working on my most important projects. The ritual, the smell, and the entire process now triggers my brain into focus mode. It’s like a shortcut but for your brain. When I’m done, I blow out the candle, and it waits for the next time I need to engage in that project.
These rituals work on our brains. They help you stay focused and more in the moment for the most important things you do. When you give a Making Light subscription, tell your recipient about this idea and how this is your small way to help them with their essential work. They’ll appreciate that.
And while you’re doing it, you’ll know you are helping a small family-owned and operated company that focuses on making the best products and giving back. (One of my favorite things about the company is their focus on teaching kids to make candles and burn wax instead of their brains on social media.)
Best of all, use the code “Sparky” and get a $10 discount code on any new subscription. This offer is time-limited, and the holidays are approaching, so don’t miss out.
In a world where technology is increasingly conspiring to steal our focus and attention, my goal is to teach you how to be more productive with Apple technology. I want to help you achieve what is most important to you and enjoy your life at the same time using technology instead of becoming another one of its victims. Pretty much everything I make points at that North Star. I believe in this message so much that I’ve staked my livelihood on it.
THE MACSPARKY DISPATCH Hello friend, This week, Apple announced some new products specifically aimed at the home. There's also the Apple Home Collection, with cameras and a smart lock from LG, plus thermostats developed with LG and Schneider Electric. The hardware starts arriving later this fall, with Home Collection accessories following in...
THE MACSPARKY DISPATCH Hi Friend,Last night I had an interesting experience. I was watching a baseball game with my wife, and she looked at me and said, "Didn't that guy pitch last night?" I told her no. She looked at me the way wives sometimes look at husbands, and then she pulled out her phone, activated Siri AI, and asked it, "Did number 59 on the Dodgers pitch last night?" Sure enough, Siri AI reported, he did. Then she smiled at me and set her phone down. Gang, Siri is good at world...
THE MACSPARKY DISPATCH Hi Friend, I recently did a quarterly planning session with some of the MacSparky Labs members. I do that every quarter and find it really rewarding. It gives us a bit of a personal accountability circle. During the session, I started talking about the importance of quarterly review. Now I know, reading this, you're thinking that the new year is just around the corner. If you're going to start thinking about planning and priorities, that seems like the ideal time to do...
